Reviews

ChiCon/WorldCon =
Craig = Virtual attendee. It was oK for most programming. Failed in the evening hangouts (usually found out after the fact). Got to attend most of what he cared about. Still have a few things to catch up on.
Howeird: Also virtual. First day sucked lemons. Audio people didn’t know what they were doing. On Friday, it got better. Was able to hear everything for the rest of the con. MC for Masque was brilliant. The schedule app was showing PT, not Central – which caused some confusion. Good variety of subjects. Just disappointed at the first day. Hugos on YouTube went well. Was disappointed with the Hugo statue base design. (Craig: It’s a simple design, but was apparently better in person).
David: Watched the Hugos on YT. Thought it went quite well. Quick and snappy, with minimal lag. Under 2 hours.
Fred: AirMeet platform. Either is panelist mode, or table mode. These modes were not communicated. Info desk had no info on these setups, but he passed on info to them. Apparently the team was understaffed. Schedule was still being finalized shortly before the con. Online site selection worked perfectly for him. Most of the people in person seemed to behave themselves. Winnipeg and Glasgow will be included in any comments about Chicago.
There was lots of SMOFing

DavidG = How I spent my Summer Vacation… Had 2 weeks off through Labor Day. Creation 56 Year Mission in Las Vegas, where Spring was a dealer. Drove out on Tue. i-15 was closed, so went I-40 (pity was in a hurry, but it was gorgeous). Was still later than usual (At Ballys instead of the Rio). Thu evening he started feeling unwell, felt like his normal cold progression. Tested negative on Friday. Took another on Sunday and was positive. Drove home Monday, and got a Paxlovid RX that was picked up in Bakersfield. Unfortunately, Spring tested positive when they got home. So WorldCon was now out of the question. Five days later, he tested negative. Not worth it (COVID that is). Caught up on the Tom Holland Spiderman Films. Most of his problems were his own doing.

Yochanan = A week ago saw the Fathom 40th anniversary of ST2 the director’s cut. His favorite of the series. Great movie, glad to see it again.
Then went to see Moon Man (2022 Chinese film, based on a Koren Comic) Sci-fi comedy adventure. All over the map. Reminded of Armageddon/Deep Impact, Gravity, Moon, Red Dwarf (but a Kangarro instead of a cat). Saw it with a predominantly Chinese audience. English & Chinese subs. Liked it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_Man_(2022_film)
Amphibia (D+) Animated series. Kind of juvenile sitcom (at first) Each episode is 2x15. Second season progressed into an arc. By season three there’s a whole mythos. Great message. So sucked into it by the end. Interesting cast (including Ru Paul).

Rick = Rings of Power. Showing real promise. Getting better and better. Characters and writers are improving. Aboard for the ride.

Rumor of the Week: Covid is the Wrath of Con
