Reviews

JohnO = Monarch Legacy of Monsters (AppleTV+) Set a few years after the latest Godzilla reboot (but before Kong crossover). Set in 2015. Enjoying it, not terribly deep. Not every episode has monsters. Recommend.
& he reviewed = For All Mankind (AppleTV+) Alternate history Russians first on the moon. History diverges. Each season is in different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, 00s…) Actors are all really good (not big names). Highly recommend.
Rick: Stick with it. It continues to be good. They get to Mars. Highly recommend.
& he reviewed = The Boy and the Heron (in theaters) set during WW2. Young boy looses mother in a fire at a hospital. Moves out to the country to mother’s family home. Father has relationship with aunt. Boy is led by a talking crane to adventures in another world. Not the best Miyazaki films. Could have been trimmed. Matinee, may loose visual impact on TV.

Yochanan = A Haunting in Venice (on Hulu) found it the weakest of the three Branagh/Poirot films. None of the characters were likable, and a bit darker.
Gayle: There are other versions to choose from.
& he reviewed = The Shift (in Theatres) produced by a religious group – a bit polarizing. Alt history, about a Job like character. Acting was great, interesting ideas, execution was sloppy and hard to follow. Sean Astin & John Billingsly were in it. Decent. Worth matinee. If you go in with an open mind.
& reviewed = Bottecelli’s Drawings really shows how the drawings were the basis for the paintings. So beautiful. Worth a trip to Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Wonderful time. There’s a $75 hardback catalog. Until 2/11.

Fred = Festival of the Living Rooms. Had a lot of fun (they were participants). There were younger participants – so fandom isn’t all grey! Good music, entertaining. People from around the world. A participant has a GoFund me to go to Seattle WorldCon: https://www.gofundme.com/f/send-starshadow-to-seattle-worldcon-in-2025
Lisa: Saw the daytime events on Sat & Sun. Enjoyed every minute.

Rick = BBC/D+ Doctor Who The Giggle It was a thing. Quite good. This was the swan-song for the 14th, and introduction to the 15th. NPH is worth the price of admission. A tad rushed.
Yochanan: Highly recommend all the specials. This was his favorite of the three. Creepy, funny, has the Doctor – all great!
Ken: A. MAZE. ING. Guest star Neil Patrick Harris was great, and Ncuti Gatwa's first appearance as The Doctor was incredible.
JohnO: Yes, amazing. NPH chewing the scenery with voice and expressions.

Gayle: Met production of Florencia en el Amazonas (in Spanish), magic realism story. Hard to follow, but the music was interesting. Was a big hit. Had a lot of Spanish singers. https://www.metopera.org/season/in-cinemas/ Click on Find your Cinema at lower left, if it gives you the New York Area, enter your city and state under Find by State on the left side, then choose a nearby cinema on the map or browse through the listing on the left side. Click on View Upcoming Events and select Florencia en el Amazonas and select the December 13 1:00 pm or 6:30 showings. You can then buy tickets on line but I think you may have to order at least 2 days in advance (maybe one day). I usually go to the theater in person to buy, since it's rare that they're sold out. There are other operas listed in the future at each theater.

Ken: Godzilla -1.0 Oh My Godzilla. Amazing film. Great drama. Had me crying by the end. Go and see it. Full price.

Rumor of the Week: Astronomers will confirm that Venus was born really hot! 5/2
