Reviews

Yochanan: Love, Death + Robots (Netflix) short animated series. Influenced by Heavy Metal. Different styles, and genres: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Comedy. Well done, but don’t recommend binging. Currently 3 seasons with 35 (short 7-20 min) episodes. Best to watch a couple and let them simmer. Scalzi, Ellison, etc… Mostly unconnected stories. Highly recommend. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love,_Death_%26_Robots
Princess Mononoke (theatres) Not a Fathom event. Watched in IMAX. Breathtaking. May not be his favorite (Spirited Away and Howell’s Moving Castle are). Saw in Japanese with subtitles. 4.5 stars (easy) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Mononoke
Rick: There is conflict, but no villains, and a depth he’s not used to in most animated films. Wonderful production.
The Book of Tomorrow by Cecilia Ahern. No time travel. YA young lady looses her comfort, and has to build back up. Started strong, but fell apart in the end. Same author as P.S. I Love You. goodreads.com/book/show/6631792-the-book-of-tomorrow

Rick: Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+) follow-on to old Netflix series, with Charlie Cox. Different tone, same setting. Interesting. A bit behind, but very worthwhile. Slightly bigger budget. Original is not needed, but highly recommended. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daredevil:_Born_Again

Robyn: James by Percival Everett (novel) re-imagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of the escaped slave Jim. Recommend full price. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_(novel)

Ken: Dr. Strangelove (National Theatre Live) Stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s film, by Armando Ianucci (The Thick of It, Veep, Death of Stalin) with Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge, Philomena, 24 Hour Party People) in all three roles that Peter Sellars did – plus the one he didn’t! Well staged, with some changes to the original text. The Hammer theatre in San Jose will be showing it one more time on Wednesday, 16 April hammertheatre.com/national-theatre-live/ or findavenue.ntlive.com for other theatres (and other shows, like The Importance of Being Ernest)

Rumor of the Week: Don’t support your local tariff.
