Reviews
Rick: Picks and Shovels by Cory Doctorow (third book in the Martin Hench series). Rick felt the story was like the author was following him around. Takes place in the Bay Area in the 80s. Many of the people acknowledged in the book were also associates of Rick’s. Not the best writer but tells a good story.
Wheel of Time (Amazon) Season 3 just ended. Had a couple barn-burner episodes. Realized the original author kind of mad-libbed the story, and they’ve moved things around to great effect for television. A fourth series has been commissioned. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wheel_of_Time_(TV_series)
The Last of Us (HBO/Max) new season (based on game franchise) Pedro Pascal. Fungi based disease apocalypse world. New season is a few years froward and consequences from the first series are coming due. Second episode is a radical change of direction for the plot (no spoilers). Recommend. Very good, worth your time. Yochanan: Watched the first season and loved it. Nephew who played the game was blown away by closeness to game.
Yochanan: The Electric State (Netflix) made for Netflix. Orphan teen with a mysterious robot searches for her brother. Not nearly as bad as all the reviews say it is. Cute, but definitely written by committee. Set in an alternate past (during Clinton era). Amazing cast Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci… Wasn’t horrible, despite the 15% Rotten Tomato score. Didn’t feel like he lost the 2hr 8mins of run time… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Electric_State_(film) Rick: Has not watched it, and respects the review. FriendlySpaceNija on YouTube has a video about the formulaic Netflix original films. youtube.com/@friendlyspaceninja
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+) Rewatching (currently near the end of season 2)., Loved it when it first appeared, however realizes that it only gets really good about halfway through season 1. His non-sci-fi sister caught some of it and was impressed. Still loves it very much, but may no longer recommend as an introductory series. (recommends being born in the ’60s and watching TOS).
Lisa: A little behind in Doctor Who. Finally watched The Robot Revolution. Was interesting, though a bit confusing. New companion won’t be a happy camper. Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson, who will be a GallifreyOne this year) was back as well. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Robot_Revolution
Ken: Doctor Who: Lux (Disney+) Oh my giddy aunt! What an episode. Amazing moments. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lux_(Doctor_Who) Rick: What he said. Step above the opener. Very meta bits.
Jersey Boys (Palo Alto Players) Well told story of the rise and fall of the band The Four Seasons. It is a jukebox musical, though a lot of the songs aren’t used to advance the plot (as in Mama Mia). Palo Alto Players always puts on a great show. Highly recommend. Extra show added on Thursday, 1 May. paplayers.org/event/jersey-boys/
Rumor of the Week: BASFA wishes to acknowledge a great man, the late Pope Francis.
