DaveC Was at Gallifrey One last weekend, with the mighty Chuck at the Cargo Cult table. Sales still good, despite a down turn for other dealers. Handed out ribbons: “Rule One: The Donald Lies” which were greeted with aplomb. Tried one nice dinner at the JW steakhouse, but was disappointed. Will be back fort he con next year. Full price. Most successful dealers were the Girl Scouts.
Mo: Did not really like the JW either. Cargo Cult was great. Helped to sell a movie herself. The Who puppet panels were great.
Lisa: Also went to Gally. Pictures line set up getting better. Lots of things she wants to do at the same time. Will go back again. Stayed at Embassy suites. Worked out well. Breakfast was helpful, as was a microwave. Little Harold enjoyed it.
eKevin: Survived throwing 3 parties. Theme worked for the new decor. Did a panel on screwball science - real things weirder than what the writers come up with. Also got tot the Batman exhibit.
Bill Went to PantheaCon. Had a generally good time, except for the slow waits on the elevator
Black Panther: Started out as a pretty good super hero move, and then got better! Shakespearian. Had a great time, worth IMAX 3D. IMAX definitely worth it, but maybe not the 3D.
JerryP: We got 5 super hero movies out of the one.
eKevin: Saw Annihilation, based on Jeff VanderMeer’s novel. Definitely the new weird, not a transcription. Jeff is thrilled how it turned out. The director describes it as a dream of how he remember the book. SF, Horror, Weird. Highly recommend.
Andy: If you liked Ex Machina, you will like this. Similar pacing. Very deliberate. Portman was absolutely everything she wasn’t in Star Wars. Gina Rodriguez & Tessa Thomson played against type. Only 2 men with more than 3 lines. Should have been un-filmable.
Mo Saw 4 of the Oscar nominated films. 3 Billboards (interesting, up and down), Phantom Thread (felt held hostage), Shape of Water (personal favorite), Ladybird (very California). Best Supporting Actor: Richard Jenkins from Shape of Water (was in 6ft under) - tuff choice between him and Sam Rockwell in 3 Billboards.
JC: Shape - Beautiful. del Torro has set another bar. Compelling, emotional. Will buy on BluRay. Doug Jones incredible as the creature.
Adrienne: Oscar marathon with AMC has in and out privileges and a booklet with all the Best Picture nominees. Went for the 2-day, instead of the 24-hour pass. Leaning towards 3 Billboards. Saw the Saw the Shorts programs as well. Doco: Knife Skills. Live-Action: Silent Child, Animated: Negative Space.
Got hooked on the Frankenstein Chronicles with Sean Bean. Well written. Grim, but not as fanciful.
JC Documentary: The Toys that Made Us. Ep.1 Star Wars and the rise of Kenner toys. Talked with the original toymakers and the short notice. About an hour long. Looking forward to watching the rest.
Andy New Tick series, second half os series 1 dropped this week. OMG - you can’t just watch one episode. Really fabulous version of The Tick.
Mo - It’s great!
There was an auction.
Meeting adjourned at 21:04, and the rumor of the week was: Last Year is not This Year, nor is it Last Year
