Reviews
Rick = New season of LoTR Ring of Power (Amazon) Fairly capable character actors, all in search of directors and writers. Worthy train-wreck. Tolkien has left the building. Worth wile if you already have Prime, or a desire to spend money on this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings:_The_Rings_of_Power
Cliff: Only half way through what’s dropped. Visually gorgeous. Favorite Tolkien Fan-fic.
Elise: Reviewed the ads for the series.
Lisa: Friends at DragonCon report that the shows panels are overflowing (including the fan panel).
James S A Corey. One of M series. The Mercy of Gods. Alien encounter where humans are conquered. Seed of a long time comeback that will be played out over the series. Worth waiting for. amazon.com/Mercy-Gods-Captives-War/dp/031652557X
Cliff: There’s a prequel novella coming out called Livesuit
Yochnanan = Season 2 of House of the Dragon (HBO) prequel to GoT. Very interesting. Little talky. Favorite is Matt Smith as someone completely different from Doctor Who. Worth price of admission. May be a couple years before season 3. Recommended. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_the_Dragon
Cliff: Moorcock derivative, that has kept deals for his work unmande.
James: S3 is a go, and thinks it might be sooner.
Source Code (2011) Time loop story. Kept his interest. Set around Chicago. Really holds up. Recommend. Directed by Duncan Jones (of Moon) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Code
Saw Whisper of the Heart (Ghibli Anime, Fathom). Beautiful. Subbed (enjoys that more) The least fantasy of the Ghibli films he’s seen. Coming of age romance. Little fantasy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whisper_of_the_Heart
Lisa: Saw it in dubbed version. Carey Elwes is the cat in this. It’s the story of the author of The Cat Returns. Well done, very real.
Keith = He and Rani went to Lick Observatory lecture series on Dark Energy. Accessible and concise. Saw M92 through one of the telescopes. Elevator floor is broken, and there is a fundraiser. Also got to go on the friends of tour. Highly recommend, but it’s done for the year. lickobservatory.org/events/
Gerald: One of his writing group got married up at Lick (at sunset). Got some unbelievable views of Saturn, and could se the spokes!
Rani: 9 of the first 10 exoplanets were discovered there.
Rani = Catch Penny by Charley Huston. Very engaging. Entertaining, engaging and fun. penguinrandomhouse.com/books/725748/catchpenny-by-charlie-huston/
Cliff = Alien Romulus (saw a couple weeks ago). Really liked it. If you liked the first two, you probably like this. If you also like Prometheus, you’ll really like this. Great ensemble cast. Young colonists trying to better their lives go to the wrong place. Good. Scary. Set between the first two films (roughly 20 years after Alien). Looks beautiful. Worth big screen. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien:_Romulus
Yochanan: Also enjoyed it. Very impressed by the sets – similar to the original film’s. Very good. 3rd favorite of the series.
Talia = YouTube Murder Drones. AI robots that are hunting other AI robots. Plot twists. Really fun. Robots can morph into things. Set on an exoplanet that is really cold. Teens & YA. 8 ~20 min episodes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_Drones
James = Full season of Blue Eyed Samurai. Very well written. Animation for smart people (not for children). Never lagged. Understands a seasons season is coming. (domestic production, in English). Has adult themes and violence and nudity. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Eye_Samurai
Rick: Rave review. Get a picture of Japan in winter months. While American, gets the feel of the time it was set. Incredible animation, a bit violent.
Gerald = Met a Dutch author name Renske de Wolf. Heroic fantasy The King of Wolves. YA with sex and violence. Page turner, good characters. Recommend. amazon.com/Crowfield-Chronicles-King-Wolves-ebook/dp/B0CJLXMQ5Q
Jerry = Star Trek Live: This Way to Eden (The Oasis, SF) Hilarious drag version of the Star Trek episode. Highly recommend. 21+ sfoasis.com/startrek2024
