SJGiants Harry Potter night on Friday, July 31.
Still waiting on when or if the season will begin. If they keep the event dates the same, no issue. If they move the dates we’ll have dibs on the new date. If there is no season they would like me to use payment as deposit on game from 2021 season. If you paid up, and it’s cancelled (or the new date doesn’t work) Ken will refund you regardless of the SJ Giants policy.
No new business
Announcements
Lisa: Fanime has officially cancelled this year’s convention. Tickets will be rolled over to 2021. If you booked your hotel through the convention, the booking will be voided. fanime.com
DaveG: ConZealand will be virtual this year. An announcement with more details is expected Tuesday.
Ken: Being virtual means it will truly be the first World.Con.
Reviews
DaveW: Semper Augustus, by Nancy Kress (novella in the Mar/Apr edition of Asimov’s) near-future dystopia in which aliens have visited Earth and made their technology available to elites, displacing a lot of working-class jobs. Income inequality, terrorist/resistance group, a more authoritarian US government using the terrorists to justify military crackdowns on the population. Protagonist born into poverty, becomes a fashion model and gets tension between her old friends and new. Really good, and the alien motivation is suitably alien.
Valerie National Theatre's Jane Eyre was very artistic with a very sincere Jane-- and I'm not usually a fan of that story. Free through Thurs, then a new play's coming. The Saturday Night Seder with celebrities on youtube was delightful -- hilarious and appropriate. A good guide for teaching about the seder. https://www.saturdaynightseder.com/ Haven't tried the Globe's free Hamlet or Big Finish's free weekly Dr Who story yet but there's lots of great free stuff. Phantom of the Opera on youtube Friday. I've also been doing delightful book talks through zoom and Jewish Community Library.
Joni Discovered through Amazon that there were more Midnight, Texas books, and that there even was a television series on NBC!
Fred [hybrid review/announcement] CBS All Access streaming service is offering free access to their service (promo code GIFT or ALL) Watched Star Trek: Picard [Ken lost track for a bit: sorry…] www.cbs.com/all-access
Todd: Enjoyed Picard
DaveG: Picard quite good. Catching up on Discovery
JohnO: Enjoyed Picard, especially how they handled the character being older. CBS All Access also has all the Star Trek series’ available.
Valerie: Found the first half of Picard boring, second half revved up. It’s all fan service, but fun fan service.
Kennita: Cheetah cub cam: nationalzoo.si.edu/webcams/cheetah-cub-cam
DaveW: John Oliver show last night has a news reporter at home with cat “cleaning” itself in the background.
DaveG: KTVU’s Bill Martin had a cat tail in his weather report.
Lisa: Monterey Bay Aquarium also doing live feeds montereybayaquarium.org/animals/live-cams
Joni: Monterey Bay Aquarium also has backgrounds for your Zoom needs montereybayaquarium.org/animals/wallpapers
JohnO Having heard wonderful things, he and Chris are finally watching the Good Place (part way into the second season now.) Enjoying the heck out of it. Minor character stole the moment: The actress portraying Chef Patricia had the body and facial mannerisms of an angry chef while pleasantly delivering nice dialogue.
Kennita: Second that it’s worth watching
DaveW: Number of treats ahead of season 2. There’s also a Good Place podcast!
Alex: You might accidentally learn some philosophy!
Ken: Ordered the BluRay that comes out in May.
No auction…
Meeting was adjourned at 21:01, and the rumor was: Corona virus was started by pets to make their humans stay home more often.
